Vitamin D deficiency has been demonstrated to result in itching, muscle weakness, and peripheral neuropathy. In one study, Vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency was associated with poor outcomes, including prolonged ICU and hospital length of stay. The purpose of this study is to identify the incidence of Vitamin D deficiency after a major burn injury and then evaluate the effects of Vitamin D replacement on burn outcomes. The primary hypothesis is that high-dose Vitamin D replacement will decrease the severity of burn-related secondary conditions such as fatigue, pain, pruritis/itch, and peripheral neuropathy.
