Abstract:
Article describes how a supported employment approach can be used to assist people with spinal cord injury in returning to work. Supported employment is distinct from other vocational interventions in that it capitalizes on the person's existing abilities, provides on-the-job vocational interventions, and provides ongoing long-term support throughout employment. Some of the barriers that people with SCI may face are described, along with ways that employment specialists can help the person circumvent those issues. A case study is presented that describes one individual's return to work.
