Abstract:
Study compared bone loss at the os calcis with bone loss at the knee in 5 individuals with complete and 1 with incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI). Bone mineral density was measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) at the knee and os calcis, which was also assessed by ultrasound. Bone loss in the os calcis was 38 percent by DEXA and 49 percent by ultrasound compared with 24 percent at the knee when measured 12 to 18 months after injury. Annualized bone loss rates were similar for participants with complete and incomplete SCI at the os calcis, but not at the knee.
