Article reviewing lessons for future research learned from recent clinical trials assessing the efficacy of early intervention in spinal cord injury (SCI). The author draws from his own experience of recent trials and from a workshop on clinical trials in rehabilitation sponsored by the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research. The discussion emphasizes considerations that should be examined by rehabilitation investigators who use impairment, functional limitation, and functional capacity as clinical outcome measures.
