Abstract:
Study examined the relationship between shoulder strength and pushrim biomechanical variables in manual wheelchair users. Peak isokinetic shoulder strength variables (flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal rotation, and external rotation) were tested in 22 manual wheelchair users. Kinematic and kinetic data were collected as subjects propelled their own wheelchairs at 2 speeds (2 and 4 miles per hour) for 20 seconds. Peak isokinetic forces in the cardinal planes were correlated with pushrim biomechanical variables including tangential force, radial force, axial force, total force, fraction of effective force, and cadence. All peak torque variables correlated significantly with tangential force, radial force and total force, but were not significantly correlated with axial force, fraction of effective force, or cadence. There were no relationships found between muscle strength ratios and any pushrim biomechanical variables.
